America, America, this is you.

So apparently NBC is airing some sort of “Amazing Race” knockoff called “The Great American Road Trip,” in which families compete at various challenges at landmarks along Route 66. Exciting! Perhaps this means I’m now part of the zeitgeist? After all these years of being interested in needlepoint, professional whistling, and the minor works of Caroline B. Cooney, I’ve finally got my finger on the American pulse. On the other hand, the ratings are awful, I’ve never heard a friend mention it even in passing, no one is writing about it, and the host is an Atlanta comedian who seems to be best known for joining Larry the Cable Guy on a national tour in 2004. Still: mini-zeitgeist? Whaddya think? Eh? Eh?

  1. Is it bad that Caroline B. Cooney books still make me nostalgic?
